Mantachie-Gary Wallis Norman, 74, died in the early morning hours of August 3, 2018 at the North Miss. Medical Center Hospice Unit after a better than year long struggle with Alzheimer’s/Dementia. Gary was born in Baldwyn on April 21, 1944 to the late Frank Eugene and Monia Gwendolyn Wallis Norman. Gary had a wonderful childhood in Baldwyn, graduated from Baldwyn High School and attended Itawamba Junior College. He furthered his education at his beloved Mississippi State University, ultimately receiving his MA from Delta State University. Gary spent first half of his working life as a school teacher and coach. He taught history and coached football, basketball and baseball at Calhoun City, Alcorn Central, Chickasaw Academy twice and retired from Sharkey-Issaquena Academy in Rolling Fork. In l977, he returned to the Tupelo area where he began yet another career working for the State Department of Mental Health/North Miss. Regional Center as Group Home Director of Rosedale/Glendale Homes in Fulton. He was respected by residents and their families alike as well as his co workers. Gary was a staunch Mississippi State Bulldog to a fault. He followed the Dogs wherever they were playing and seldom missed any of their TV appearances. Gary loved the outdoors especially gardening and enjoyed “piddling” in his wood shop. Gary was a longtime member of Wesley United Methodist Church in Tupelo.

A service celebrating his life will be held at 2 PM Sunday, Aug. 5, 2018 at the Tupelo Chapel of Holland Funeral Directors with Rev. Roger Puhr officiating. Private burial will follow in Tupelo Memorial Park. Visitation will be from 3 PM-5 PM today (Sat. 8/4/18) and from Noon-service time on Sunday, all at Holland-Tupelo Chapel, which is honored to be serving their friends.

Survivors include his wife, Carole Price Norman of Mantachie, to whom he married on May 24, 1996; his daughter, Micki Norman Bryant (Bobby) of Tupelo. His son, Lance Norman of Tupelo. His step children, Robert Strickland (Carla), Michelle Dees (Mark) of South Carolina and Billy Strickland of Verona. His grandchildren; Joshua Weaver, Jeffrey Bryant (Laine) , Phillip Bryant (Abby), Tiffany Hernandez, Joseph Strickland, Will Strickland, Decarrol Hardenburg, Anthony, Michael and Victoria Margain, Gabriel, Abigail, William “Frog”, III and Carolynn Strickland. 14 great grandchildren. his siblings, Hilda Norman of Minnesota and Frank Norman, Jr. (Pat) of Belden. 2 special friends, Chris and Michelle Wroten of Brewer. A host of other family members and friends.

Pallbearers will be Jeffrey Bryant, Phillip Bryant, Chris Wroten and Robert Strickland. Memorials may be made to the Alzhiemer’s Association of Mississippi, 855 S. Pear Orchard Rd., # 501,Ridgeland, MS. 39157 or to the North Miss. Medical Center Hospice Unit, 830 South Gloster, Tupelo, MS. 38801.

The service may be viewed via at 2 PM Sunday and for 60 days thereafter.
