Tupelo – Martha Sue Stanfill, 85, died Sunday, June 24, 2018, at North Mississippi Medical Center in Tupelo, Mississippi, surrounded by her family and Rev. Roger Puhr of her beloved church. She was born May 17, 1933, in Lenox, Tennessee, to the late Mr. and Mrs. Evans Thurmond. She was the eighth of eleven children. Sue grew up in Dyersburg, Tennessee, where she was very active in the 4-H Club and graduated high school.
After high school, Sue worked as a telephone switchboard operator at Bell Telephone Company in Chicago, Illinois. At the age of 20, she married the love of her life, the late James Roger Stanfill, beginning their life in California then moving to Kentucky, Tennessee, and Mississippi for Roger’s occupation. She owned East Heights Child Nursery for 11 years. Sue and Roger went on to open Sears Home Stores in Philadelphia and Senatobia, Mississippi, as well as McMinnville, Tennessee. Lastly, she worked as a salesperson for World Book Encyclopedia for over 40 years earning many trips nationally and globally and making life-long friendships.
After retirement, Sue thoroughly enjoyed volunteering at North Mississippi Medical Center and working in the Infant Room at Harrisburg Baptist Church Day School. She also enjoyed cooking for others, gardening, reading, talking on the telephone with friends and family, and being involved in The Christian Women’s Club and church activities.
The people she loved were Sue’s priority in life. She was happiest when spending time with family & friends, especially when caring for them. She was a proud member of Wesley United Methodist Church, including the Wesleyan Sunday School Class. In July 2017, Sue moved to Avonlea Assisted Living Facility where she formed many dear friendships with residents and staff.
Sue was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and great grandmother. She loved her family and friends deeply. She was most known for her kindheartedness, generosity, compassion, and sense of humor. She will be profoundly missed.
Survivors include her two daughters: Jennifer Stanfill Warren and Susan Stanfill Malouf (Mike); two sons: Steven Ray Stanfill (Laura) and James Mark Stanfill; seven grandchildren: Derek Edward Warren (Amy), Anna Catherine Warren, Morgan McKendry Stanfill, Ann Leighton Malouf, Michael James Malouf, III, Chambers Stanfill Malouf, and Sarah Elizabeth Stanfill; and three great grandchildren: Ayden Smith, Sam Thompson, and Katherine James Warren due in October. Surviving siblings include one brother: Jimmy Thurmond (Shirley); and two sisters: June Nunley and Ann Quirk (John). She is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews.
She is preceded in death by her husband, James Roger Stanfill; her granddaughter, Whitney Stanfill Thompson; her parents; two brothers: Evans Thurmond, Jr. and Talmadge Thurmond; five sisters: Ruby Thurmond, Pauline Grimes, Dorothy Scamorza, Beadie Duggan, and Maxine Clayton.
Pallbearers are grandsons and granddaughters.
A celebration of life service will be at 12:00 p.m., Thursday, June 28, 2018, in the Tupelo Chapel of Holland Funeral Directors with Rev. Roger Puhr officiating. Burial will follow at Lee Memorial Park in Verona, Mississippi. Visitation will be Wednesday from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. and Thursday from 11:00 a.m. to service time.
