Tupelo-One of the great Christian soldiers of our times, Miss Helen Montgomery, peacefully transformed from this life to the life eternal, from her residence at the Gregory Green House at United Methodist Senior Services in Tupelo. She was 5 days away from her 96th birthday. Miss Helen, as she was respectfully and humbly known among hundreds of friends, had spent over 65 years as a missionary doing the Lord’s work amongst his people. Miss Helen was a member of a Non-denominational Church. She literally spent a lifetime doing for others in the spirit of the Great Commission-“Do unto others as you would have done unto you.” Miss Helen’s faith was always alive, active and encouraging. Born May 12, 1922 in the Union Community of Lee County south of Plantersville to Clifford Montgomery and Emma Lou Pettigrew Montgomery, she grew up there in a Christian environment. She and her siblings were raised primarily by their Mother off the produce of the land since their father died when they were all young. Helen graduated from Nettleton High School in l940. Her life work took her all over the United States but in her golden years, she returned to Tupelo and lived the last years of her life in the watch-care of the Traceway Manor community. She respected her caregivers and fellow residents and would make it a point to visit everyone in her “house” at least once a day. Miss Helen never met a stranger, was always smiling and was dogged and determined in her Christian faith. She will be sorely missed. A special “thank you” from the family goes to the caregivers at The Gregory House and Sanctuary Hospice Home Care.
A service celebrating her long life will be held at 11 AM Friday, May 11, 2018 at the Tupelo Chapel of Holland Funeral Directors with Mr. Charles Vaughn and Mr Randy Satterfield speaking. Private burial will follow in Lee Memorial Park. Visitation will be from 9 AM-service time on Friday only at Holland-Tupelo Chapel which is honored to be serving their neighbors.
Miss Helen was the last member of her biological siblings. She was preceded in death by her parents, her siblings, Joe Montgomery (Mama Lou Moore Montgomery), Miss Exie Montgomery, Ms. Frances Oliver (Charles Oliver), Miss Clifford Montgomery and 2 nephews and one niece. Surviving her are her Christian sister, Lucy Brooks of Duluth, Ga. and her nieces and nephews and their families: Joe Montgomery of Austin, TX, Judy Temple (Merle) of Saltillo, Johnny Oliver (Cheri) of Suwanee, GA. and Jan Garner (George) of Randolph, MS. and her Church family from around the Country.
Pallbearers will be Bob Westbrook, Randall Burchard, Dan Garner, Terry Russell, Brian Briggs, Chris King and Ritchie Little.
The service may be viewed via www.hollandfuneraldirectors.com/Livestreaming at 11 AM Friday and for 60 days thereafter. Memorials may be made to the United Methodist Senior Services Sunday Fund, 2800 West Main St., Tupelo, MS. 38801. `

I have such fond and special memories of dear Helen's years here in Colorado. One amusing story I'll always remember is when she was on the platform getting ready to speak at Bird City Convention (can't remember the year) and she caught my eye, and I don't know what possessed me to wink at her! She smiled her lovely smile and winked back at me! So precious to think of her and such a comfort to know her lifelong mission here on earth has been accomplished. Rest in peace, dear Helen!

Helen was so very special to us when we met her as children and all through the years. She was a faithful example and her life has spoken to many and will continue to speak long after she has left her earthly home. What a beautiful life spent in service to God and others! Helen was very special to me. She called me “her girl”. She helped me read and pray. I will always remember her. Jalyn Timmann, and mom and dad.

Her little barque sailed directly, never diviating or wandering, to this eternal shore where she will be welcomed 'Home'...and we safely follow her example and influence.

Helen was a special, dear lady. One of my favorite memories of her was when attending her Gospel Meetings where she had the children sit in the front rows and would begin their part in the meeting by singing, "God answers prayers in the morning...." years later we learned that this little song was composed by my son-in-laws grandmother! Helen was always so helpful in the home life, often she would say, "I don't need a big dinner, dry cereal is fine for me". (we always found more than that!) We loved her and loved her spirit!

I remember her being in Georgia during my teen years. I am so glad for her faithful example, proving you can be faithful to God no matter your age. So glad for the meetings and home visits we had then. It was a fun time for we children when she, her co-worker and mother loaded us up in the car and we would find a creek and spread lunch on the ground. We could then wade for a while in the creek. Many fond memories.
