Okolona- The sun set for our beloved mother, Doris Hill, on April 20th, 2018, at North Mississippi Medical Center. She was born August 18th, 1928, in Chickasaw County to the late Eugene and Viola Sullivan. Our mother was loved and respected by everyone who knew her. Most of the younger family members and friends referred to her as Ms. Doris or Aunt Doris. She attended public school in Egypt, MS. She loved to go to Egypt reunions and seeing so many childhood friends.
She married the love of her life DeVan Hill on October 19th, 1947. They were married 52 years until he passed away on October 24, 1999. Their bond produced two children, Brenda Hill Johnson and Ronnie DeVan Hill. Her devotion to her family was very important to her and she loved them dearly. She had the gift of hospitality, always having an open door to Brenda's and Ronnie’s friends. She was a great cook and enjoyed sharing life with all their friends. She was a stay-at-home mom for many years and later in life received her beautification license from Vaughn’s Beauty College in Aberdeen. She worked a few years at a beauty shop that was in Howard’s Department Store in Okolona. She was a very caring person, taking care of her in-laws and her parents in their later years. She and DeVan ran Hill’s Store for many years and they loved their customers.
She made numerous trips that included a cruise, three Super Bowls, and trips to the Mississippi Guif Coast and Gatlinburg. She loved to travel especially to see her grandchildren. She could talk football with the best, which included Mississippi State and NFL teams. She was baptized at the age of 15 and was guided by her faith in Christ throughout her life. She was a lifelong member of Mt. Olive Baptist Church, where she was very active. She played the piano for 20 years and was active in missions of the church. She loved all holidays and decorated for each, but Christmas was extra special at her house for all of her family. She loved to shop for gifts and made sure she had extra for children that would stop by her house.
She was preceded in death by her husband DeVan Hill, and her siblings Imogene Maurer (Lewis) and Preston “Buddy” Sullivan (Audrey). She was the last remaining aunt on the Hill side of the family. She was also preceded in death by six sets of in-laws that she loved dearly.
Those left to cherish her memory are her two children, Brenda Johnson and husband Paul of Fulton, MS, and Ronnie Hill and wife Tina of Ponte Vedra, FL. Her four grandchildren, each loved and cherished by their Grandmama, are Leigh Craft (Paul) of Cumming, GA, Mitchell DeVan Johnson of Washington, DC, Austin DeVan Hill of Tampa, FL, and Ryan Harrison Hill (fiancee - Catherine) of Norfolk, VA. She is also survived by her brother Dan Sullivan (Jewel) and sister Mattie Sue Brooks (late Travis Brooks) of Okolona, MS. As many times as she could, Doris traveled to recitals, ballgames, and any activities that her grandchildren were involved in and she was cherished by their friends as another grandmother.
Another family that were her children at heart were Sue Lewis and the late Earl Lewis and their son Tommy Lewis (Angie). Sue and Earl lived in Okolona with her until she had to move to Dogwood Plantations in Fulton. At Dogwood she fell in love with the residents and the precious caregivers that loved her daily. She was a blessed woman to be loved by so many.
Pallbearers will be Preston Sullivan, Mike Sullivan, Coy Hill, Drew Downey, Freddie Brooks, and Sammy Lewis. Honorary Pallbearers include Claude Thomas, Arthur Walker, Frank Westbrook, Harvey Fisher, Howard Miskelly, Harry Bowles, Sam Pulliam, Edd Lewis, Steve Holcomb, John Andrew Gregory, David McCullough, Jack Gregory, Sammy Gooden, George Carter, and the staffs at Dogwood Plantation in Fulton and Fressenus Dialysis in Tupelo.
A celebration of her life will be held Sunday April 22nd at Holland Funeral Home in Okolona. Visitation will be from 1:00 to 3:00 PM with the service to follow at 3:00 PM with Bro.
