Tupelo-Bobby Gaston Witt returned to his Creator after a lengthy illness on March 6, 2018 at Sanctuary Hospice House. He was 87. Bobby was born May 18, 1930 in Cotton Plant, Tippah County, MS to V.C. & Cloyce Witt. He was the eldest of four siblings. In 1948 he graduated from Tippah Union School as valedictorian of his class. In 1948, he enlisted in the United States Army, spending 18 months in Korea as a welder. He served 4 years in the Army before returning home to Mississippi, where he married his wife of 64 years, Nellie Faye Benjamin. The couple had two daughters, Joyce and Sharon. He attended Northwest Mississippi Junior College and Northeast Mississippi Junior College for one year each before transferring to Mississippi State College. Majoring in Dairy Manufacturing, he made the President’s List and was a member of the 1955 Mississippi State Dairy Judging team helping his team to win a national championship. Following his graduation in 1956, he moved his family to Tupelo where Bobby began his 35 year career as the head Laboratory Technologist for the Mississippi State Board of Health located in the Lee County Health Department. He retired in 1993 and enjoyed his retirement to the fullest, spending time with his children and grandchildren, gardening, reading, and taking yearly trips to Fontana, North Carolina.
The couple joined Harrisburg Baptist Church in 1956 and have been faithful members. Bobby was a dedicated participant in Merrymakers, the Men’s Ministry, and Monday Morning Offering Counters, spending countless hours on mission trips, as well as serving as a church deacon. He was a member Tupelo Luncheon Civitan where he was honored as a Medallion Member and a Foundation Fellow. He enjoyed volunteering his time on the Fish Cooking Team and other various community events.
Funeral services will be
at 1PM Friday, March 9, 2018 at
Harrisburg Baptist Church with Dr. Forrest Sheffield and Rev. David Smith
officiating. Visitation will be held at the church on Thursday, March 8, 2018
from 4PM to 7PM and Friday from
noon to service time. Burial will follow
at Vista Memorial Gardens in New Albany at 3PM. In lieu of flowers, please make
donations to the Harrisburg Men’s Ministry or Sanctuary Hospice House.
Bobby is survived by his
wife, Nellie; daughter, Joyce Crider of Tupleo, daughter and son-in-law, Sharon
and Roger Stegall of Iuka; brother and sister-in-law, Vance and Tootsie Witt of
New Albany; brother-in-laws, Bobby Griffin of Booneville and Billy Barkley and
Anne of Cotton Plant, grandchildren, John Crider, Patrick Crider, and Rebekah
Crider; and great-grandson, Aiden Crider; as well as many extended family
members. He is preceded in death by his parents and his sisters, Betty Barkley
and Jettie Lee Griffin.
