Palmetto-Leonard Bradley McGehee, 92, died Friday, Feb. 23, 2018 at the Reed Greenhouse at United Methodist Senior Services, where he had resided for three years. Born in Akron, Ohio on September 27, l925, he and his family moved to the Darracott Community of Monroe County when he was a lad. He graduated from West Point High School. A patriotic American, Ensign McGehee enlisted in the U. S. Navy where he served in the Amphibious Forces as a coxswain during World War II. He married Charlie Mae Hulsee in Tupelo on Dec. 29, l944, a marriage of 67 years until her death on May 19, 2011. Leonard was a hard worker all his life. He worked over 40 years at Daybrite Lighting in Tupelo and was a former President of the IEBW Union. After retiring from Daybrite, he worked for Red Arrow Truck Lines and Stanley Mirrors. He finally retired at age 87 from security work. A happy man, Leonard was a great storyteller and loved people. He was solid old school and admired his family and his grands who knew him as Pa. A Mason affiliated with the Palmetto Lodge #152. Leonard believed in the Masonic fraternity. He lectured many aspiring Masons and challenged many to live a life of brotherly love, relief and truth. Leonard was a longtime member of the First Baptist Church of Shannon and, at his death, was a member of the Palmetto Baptist Church. Leonard loved the outdoors, hunting and fishing and made the best fudge and fruit cakes in these parts. He and Charlie Mae were longtime volunteers and surrogate parents at the Gardner-Simmons Home for Girls. The happiest times were when he was with his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren.
Services are 2 PM Sunday, Feb. 25, 2018 at Holland Funeral Directors, Tupelo Chapel with Bro. Jimmy Webb and his son in law, Bro. Cayce Harrison officiating. Burial will follow in Lee Memorial Park. Visitation is Noon-service time Sunday only at Holland, Tupelo, which is honored to be serving longtime friends..
He is survived by four daughters; Connie Tullos of Tupelo, Betsy Fortson (Phillip) of Brandon, Sue Hancock (Ron) of Nacogdoches, Texas and Nancy Harrison(Cayce) of Russellville, Alabama, a son; Leonard Bradley McGehee, Jr. of Tupelo, 14 grandchildren and 27 great grandchildren. his sister in law, Harriett McGeehee of Petal. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Charlie Mae, his brother, Harry and a special brother in law; Gene Hulsee.
Pallbearers are his grandchildren.
