Marvin Hurdle



Saltillo - Marvin Travis Hurdle, 81, of Saltillo, died unexpectedly on February 14th, 2018. He was born May 27, 1936 in Taylor, MS, to the late Travis and Hazel Jarvis Hurdle. Marvin graduated from Mississippi State University with a bachelor’s degree in Forestry. Thereafter, he moved to Ashland, MS, with the Mississippi State Forestry Commission, where he met his beloved wife of 55 years, Carole Whiteside Hurdle. Marvin spent most of his career, almost 35 years, working for the United States Fish and Wildlife Service, primarily as a refuge manager of numerous wildlife refuges across the Southeast. After retirement, Marvin and his wife moved to Tupelo, where they have been active members of St. Luke United Methodist Church and the Exodus Sunday School class.
Marvin was an ardent reader, well-versed in the history of Christianity. He also enjoyed birdwatching, gardening, and watching Mississippi State basketball games. Above all, he cherished every moment spent with his family.
In addition to his wife Carole, Marvin leaves behind his son Michael (Harriett) Hurdle of Hendersonville, TN, his daughter Melody (Chris) Eagan of Birmingham, AL; two brothers, Johnny (Johnnie) Hurdle of Water Valley and Robert (Sharon) Hurdle of Tupelo; seven grandchildren, Clayton and Christopher Hurdle, Sam, Will, Claire and Christopher Eagan, and Emily (Dave) Cutt; and one great-grandchild.
A Celebration of Life service will be held at St. Luke United Methodist Church at 2 p.m. on Saturday, February 17, with the Rev. Rob Gill officiating. Visitation will be held at 1:00 p.m. until service time, with inurnment in the church columbarium following the service.
