Okolona-Dessie Maud Owen Bryant, 91, died Sunday, October 1, 2017 at Sanctuary Hospice House. Born in Bolivar County, Miss. on Dec. 27. 1925 to the late Henry Lewis Owen and Bettie Scallions Owen, Dessie grew up a farm girl learning the values of hard work and thrift. She married M. L. Bryant of Okolona on Nov. 14, l942, a marriage of 72 years at his death on Nov. 21, 2014. Dessie worked for Futorian for 21 years in retail sales and co-owned Okolona True Value Hardware in Okolona with her husband. Dessie was a Godly and lovely woman who enjoyed gardening, flowers, birdwatching especially hummingbirds and bluebirds. She always had a smile and hug awaiting family and friends. She was a longtime member of First Baptist Church of Okolona and attended Common Ground Christian Church in Wren.
A service celebrating her life will be held at 11 AM Wednesday, Oct. 4, 2017 at the Okolona Chapel of Holland Funeral Directors with Bro. David Pannell and Bro. R. Kay Willardson officiating. Burial will follow in the Bryant Family Plot at Boone’s Chapel Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4 PM-7PM today (Tue) and from 10 AM-service time Wednesday at Holland-Okolona Chapel which is honored to be serving their friends.
Blessed with a large loving family, those left to cherish her memory include her children: Marvin L. Bryant (Debbie) of Okolona and Kentucky, Bobby O. Bryant of Okolona, Marie Bryant Pope (Charles Clifton) of Kosciusko, MS., Donny Bryant (Alice) of Tupelo and Gene A. Bryant of Meridian. 18 grandchildren, 38 great grandchildren and 4 great-great grandchildren. 3 sisters, Betty Joe Bain of Jackson, Fannie Mae Smith of Kansas City, KS and Jackie Sue Owen of Sebestapol, MS. , a special friend and caregiver, Marla Elmore of Okolona. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, M.L., son, Dennis Michael “Mickey” Bryant in 2006, a daughter in law, Barbara Bryant, 1 granddaughter, Angela Yvette Bryant and 9 siblings.
Pallbearers will be grandson’s; Dr. Lamar Bryant, Brand Bryant, Clifton Pope, Christopher Pope, Scott Bryant and Cade Bryant. Honorary pallbearers will be grandson’s in law.
