Tupelo - Hazel Lee Edwards McPherson, 90, passed away on Wednesday, August 2, 2017 at Sanctuary Hospice House in Tupelo. She was born on June 26, 1927, in Cullman County, AL, to the late Monroe and Lillie Mae Edwards.
Hazel was a graduate of Cold Springs High School, where she met the love of her life, Weylan Bruce McPherson. They were married on June 29, 1948, and she remained his best friend and partner for nearly 68 years until his death March 23, 2016.
After graduating high school, Hazel attended Business College in Birmingham, AL, and then taught elementary school for a couple of years at Prospect School in Cullman County, AL. In 1956, Hazel moved with her husband and their young son to Tupelo, where they opened OK Tire and Rubber Welders store on Main Street. As a loving wife, she worked alongside her husband for many years to develop the store into the present-day Mac’s Tire Center.
A dedicated member of Harrisburg Baptist Church, Hazel enjoyed serving for numerous years in the church’s nursery. She showed God’s love by ministering to family, friends, and anyone in need. For most of her married life, Hazel provided hospitality to numerous individuals as she welcomed them into her home and met their spiritual and physical needs. She also enjoyed playing cards with friends, time away at the lake or beach, and later in life spending time with her grandchildren.
She is survived by two sons, Hal (Deborah) McPherson and Rickey (Roseanne) McPherson, all of Tupelo; five grandchildren, Elena (Dr. Ben) Gilliland of Trussville, AL; Memory (Daniel) Lofton of Gluckstadt, MS; Patrick McPherson, Micah McPherson, and Dixie McPherson, all of Tupelo; two brothers, Douglas Edwards and Rollan Edwards of Hanceville, AL; three sisters, Clarcie Jones of Cullman, AL; Mary Powell of Birmingham, AL; and Melba Hipp of Pelham, AL; several nieces and nephews. Special thanks to her loving care givers: Nell Baker, Marti Holliman, Bessie Smith, Joyce Smith, and Carolyn West.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Weylan, and her oldest son, Phillip Bruce McPherson.
A service celebrating her life will be at 2:00 p.m., Sunday, August 6, 2017 in the Tupelo Chapel of Holland Funeral Directors with Bro. David Smith officiating. Visitation will be Sunday from 1:00 p.m. to service time only. Private entombment will follow at Lee Memorial Park in Verona. Condolences may be e-mailed to firstname.lastname@example.org.

Hal and Rickey, I'm so sorry for the loss of Hazel. I have such fond memories of her, including a trip to her parents' home in Cullman where Hazel and your grandmother taught me to shell peas. She was a light to many, certainly to me and my family. My deepest condolences.
